GRE Quantitative

Updated March 04, 2010

The GRE includes 3 sections: The Analytical Writing section, the Verbal section, and the Quantitative Section.

Quantitative Basics

The Quantitative Section contains multiple choice questions on American high-school level mathematics. The GRE contains approximately 28 quantitative questions, and you get 45 minutes to complete this section.

The Quantitative Section contains several types of questions:

Regular Problems: These questions are regular math problems. They may be word problems or regular questions involving algebra, arithmetic or geometry. You will have to choose the correct answer of 5 options. There are approximately 10 of these questions.

Quantitative Comparison: You will be given 2 quantities and some information about them, and you’ll have to decide whether quantity A is greater than B, B is greater than A, whether both are equal, or if there isn’t enough information given to judge. There are about 14 comparison questions in the quantitative section.

Data Interpretation: These questions present you with a graph of some sort, and ask you to answer questions based on the data given by the graph. You’ll have to choose 1 of 5 possible answers. There will only be about 4 of these questions in the section.

How To Ace the Quantitative Section:

The answer is simple: practice! The math here isn’t hard, and you get about 1.5 minutes per question. The trick is to practice until you get the timing right. Also, make sure to spend time on the comparison questions, there are more of them, and the format might be a little confusing for some people. If you practice enough there’s no reason for doing badly on this section.
